Who are the 144,000?

Followers of the Essene High Priest of Revelation.

 16^th Lecture in the “Tolerant God” Series

(As Researched and Experienced by Dr. Bob Holt, MD)

      In these, my lectures, I have denied that the real “God”, the One Divine individual still in charge of the destiny of every human on earth, has the personal traits and character attributed to Him (or Her) by those worshippers who see Him or Her as being intolerant.

      A “jealous” God who “visits the iniquity of the fathers on the children unto the third and fourth generations of them that hate me.” Exodus 20:5

       Instead I have promoted the idea that a God who is responsible for all of us being here, people of every race and description, will instead be tolerant of all types of religious beliefs, so long as they don’t harm other people, or unduly restrict the happiness and freedom of individuals, both male and female, to live normal and productive lives.

       Knowing from thousands of years of interaction with the various races that make up humanity that we humans can become quite unethical in our treatment of each other, and that the strong and the clever amongst us will manipulate and enslave the weaker and more vulnerable of us, if given unlimited opportunities to do so, this Divine Person has allowed various religions to develop.   Indeed He has encouraged these religions, for they tend to keep large groups of people under control and behaving much better than they might behave without the control of these religious beliefs.    It matters not to a tolerant God whether all of these beliefs are truthful, or indeed if any of them are truthful.

       However, if such an individual that we could name “God” exists, and I believe one does, he (or she) must have a standard for Himself (or Herself) that is superior to what we, as human beings, generally are willing to settle for.   And that this standard is intellectual integrity.  “ God”, I believe, has demonstrated intellectual integrity in the Bible book of Isaiah.    Jesus saw this to be true, and that’s why he quoted the Isaiah scroll.  Furthermore, I believe Jesus, as an Essene, helped add to the Book of Isaiah.

 The “Key” Texts, Isaiah 66:1,2,4

         By the time I really understood verse Isaiah 66:4, I realized that the clever author or authors were here addressing the age-old religious conundrum of why a powerful God does not step in to right the wrongs apparent in human interactions.   We, the text states in so many words, are getting the type of religion we want, not the so-called “truth” some of us think we want.    We wish to be deluded, so “God” allows us to be deluded.   Indeed “He” sends us the delusions to keep us happy – or at least occupied!

       Isaiah 66:1 “Thus saith the Lord, (the TRUE LORD, the One in control, a Tolerant God, the One with a sense of humor), The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: (I’m so big, and you’re so small), where is the house that you build unto me? And where is the place of my rest?”

        Isaiah 66:2 “For all these things (the stars, the planets, the earth and everything on it) hath my hand made, and all these things hath been (so long as anything living can remember), saith the Lord: but to this (mere) man will I look, even to him that is poor (a common nickname for the Essenes) and of a contrite spirit, (the Essenes invented the idea of the Holy Spirit), and trembleth at my word.” (Jesus Christ became known as “The Word of God” first in John’s Gospel, then later in Acts it was his “Code Name”.)

        My understanding of what is shown and implied by Isaiah chapter 66 has grown over the years since I discovered this “key” to the place that I can now say with some certainty that Jesus Christ is the author of this entire chapter, and that Lord Shiva is the Tolerant God here referred to.   The humor that peeks out here and there in the chapter is the humor of Jesus, so evident in his gospel parables and sayings.     

 Permission to Delude Us Gentiles

      Isaiah 66:3e “Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.”   Here Jesus, as an Essene “Messiah” and a life-long vegetarian and Seventh-day Sabbath-keeper is mocking the pork-eating Sunday-keepers of the Dark Ages and Middle Ages, and the Church named in his honor that worships before images of the crucifix and a multitude of “Saints” directly breaking the second commandment of the decalog, and inviting the wrath of Jehovah – Yahweh – Allah for 3 or 4 (or is it a thousand?) generations.

        Isaiah 66:4 “I also (Jesus with Lord Shiva’s permission) will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them (hell on earth); because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.”  

       There it is, in the plain text.  We Gentiles are getting what we want.  A religion that allows us to eat swine’s flesh and worship the images of “Saints” designated as such by the popes of the Roman Catholic church.  Goaded into constantly fearing purgatory and hell fire and to give money to the church. Supposedly by doing this, we are protected from punishment now and forever by little “Jesus Crackers” and specially blessed wine for the priests.   And in gardens in front of the churches stand the mighty crucifixes that make all this possible!   The author of Isaiah 66 is not through, however.   There’s Isaiah 66:17.  Which reveals what will really happen to those so deluded!

    “They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the garden behind one tree in the midst (symbolically, a crucifix), eating swine’s flesh, and the abomination (other non-Kosher foods), and the mouse (computer games?), SHALL BE CONSUMED TOGETHER, saith the Lord.”  

    We Gentile Christian “fish” have been caught, hook, line, and sinker.  And at the end of the age, we will fry!  Not a pretty picture, but to the Essene companions of Jesus (the 144,000 “male virgins”), a humorous one!  

 The Essene High Priest of Early Revelation

      Although Jesus slyly made fun of those who think they can float forever on heavenly clouds of bliss and contentment, after living lives of deceit and debauchery, there was indeed a group of people he did admire and respect, and spent a lot of time with while he was living in the Qumran area from 29 AD to 34 AD, although this information is still pretty well “covered up” by those who would rather believe the myths promoted by the orthodox churches for almost 2000 years.

       In this lecture I will take the time and effort to “debunk” the “cover-up” that most or virtually all of the researchers use to distance Jesus Christ and his twelve disciples from the Essenes, that group of Holy Men and Dead Sea Scroll Scribes who lived, among many other places in Judea, and throughout the Roman Empire, and even, it seems, in India.   Those who do this, support a “cover-up”, are doing it to maintain their own power and prestige, and avoid a lot of “house-cleaning” in their own religious denominations, a task that they choose to avoid if at all possible.   So far they have been pretty successful in this “cover-up”, even though knowledge of the Essenes is now much more accessible than it was about 60 years ago when the cover-up began.   

      One of the most transparent areas of New Testament Scripture so far as the Essenes are concerned, are the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew, and the description of the group of people designated as the 144,000 Male Virgins of the Book of Revelation.  In Revelation chapter 1-4, a “High Priest” is described carrying on his usual activities during “Yom Kippur”, the Jewish fast also known as the “Day of Atonement”.   We will discover as we read this High Priest’s description, that it is Jesus who is being described.   He is described in a superlative, “apocalyptic” fashion, but is still recognizable to even the most critical researchers.    But he is also described as doing the things and wearing the clothing of an Essene High Priest, not the regular Jewish High Priest doing other things at Herod’s temple in Jerusalem. 

      Specifically, in the Revelation 1-4 activities of Jesus as an Essene High Priest, there are no goats, one of which must be taken out into the wilderness and “set free” (the scapegoat), and no bloody sacrifice at all, except references later in Revelation to Jesus himself as a “slain lamb” that is still alive.    And the priest is wearing only a white garment with a golden girdle.   Missing is the blue and purple finery of the Jewish High priest, the breast-plate with the “Urim” and “Thummin”, and the mitre (crown) of the High Priest.   We shall discover by chapter 7 that this Essene High Priest of chapters 1-4 has surrounded himself with 144,000 special followers who are as Essene as he is!

In the Midst of the Seven Candlesticks

        Revelation 1:13 “And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.”

     While standing here in the Sanctuary, surrounded by the seven candlesticks (the Menorah), Jesus dictates letters to the seven churches.   Messages that take up the space between Revelation 2:1 and 3:22.

      The next part of the Essene ceremony would be to enter the Most Holy Place with a golden censor with smoke pouring forth from burning incense.    In chapter 4:1 “a door was opened in heaven ---“  but through the door we do not see the “Ark of the Covenant” but instead, a throne (verse 2), and around the throne 24 elders (verse 4).

        Revelation 4:6 “And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.”

       After describing these beasts quite similarly to the insignias on the four individuals accompanying the “Divine Chariot” of Ezekiel chapter one, a book is given to the “Lamb” by the one who sat on the throne.   A book sealed with seven seals.   As each of the seven seals are opened, tremendous events occur.   It is during the sixth seal that the 144,000 special followers of Jesus are first mentioned specifically.    And not until Revelation 8:3-5, during the seventh seal, that Jesus cast the smoking censor to the earth, effectively ending the Yom Kippur Ceremony.

The Identity of the 4 Angels of Revelation 7

        Revelation 7:1”And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.”

       Here, as in Isaiah 66:3, Essene Astrology is the key, without which there is no way to understand who these “four angels” are.  They are, as in Isaiah 66:3, the four figures of the Zodiac, Taurus, Aries, Pisces, and Aquarius (Ox, Lamb, Fishes =Swine’s Blood, Incense to an Idol). Those willing to agree to this Astrology (shown by the Horoscopes among the Dead Sea Scrolls) can go on to understand the “winds” held in check by the “four angels” are the “winds” of controversy and disappointment that are inevitably active when one age ends and another begins.   Since Zodiac Ages last exactly 2000 years in Essene Eschatology, we can be certain here that Adam’s and Noah’s “Age” was thought to end as Abraham’s and David’s “Age” was beginning around 2000 BC.   And the “Age” of the Fishes (“swine’s blood”) was brought in by the “winds” started in motion by the Essenes and Jesus with his Twelve Apostles.   And that now (about 2000 AD – actually 1844-1888, 1948, 1988. and 9-11-2001) the “winds” are very much blowing once again   Don’t expect the Elohim to interfere!   They are the ones who devised this system for measuring and controlling long-term religious and political movements!

       Those who fondly hope that Christianity will escape the housecleaning caused by the “Winds of Aquarius “, (the fourth angel here) should note that the “sea” is here the 2000 years of the Age of Pisces, and “any tree” stands specifically for the crucifix (see Isaiah 66:17).   As in the other prophecies of Jesus, without Isaiah 66, we haven’t a clue!

     Nowhere, perhaps, besides the attempts of modern would-be prophets to explain how it will be that their own group will avoid being blown away by the winds of change can these would-be prophets  be so eloquent than in the case of the 144,000 Male Virgins who follow Jesus  wherever he goes.   Each tells it like it must be their group that is the favored group.  

 The Identity of the “Angel From the East”

       Revelation 7:2 “And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea.”

      We in the “Western World” were quite certain that the religions of the “East” had nothing to add to our understanding of “God” until quite recently.   Indeed, it was our destiny to convert the entire world to Christianity, for had not Simon Peter said soon after Pentecost, as quoted in Acts 4:12 “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”  We have always interpreted Peter’s words to apply to the entire world (“under heaven”), and to render inactive the claims of anyone else, Buddha, Lord Kristna, etc., to be able to offer a significant type of salvation to anyone in this world.   But in the later 19^th and 20^th centuries the interest in Eastern Religions has increased in the Western World.  And it is now possible to offer a new interpretation for Revelation 7:2.

      The new interpretation is, that true religion, the religion of the living God, comes originally from the East, “east” of  Jerusalem, India and the Orient, and Western religions are just borrowing the principles they have learned from these original Eastern religions.   Someone, here called “another angel”, has the power to altar the religious activities of the Zodiacal Ages to allow one religion in one of these Ages to become predominant. Until the winds of change are again allowed to blow.   And to “hurt the earth and the sea.”

      And now, with the information available to me since 2001, with the help of Suzanna Olsson, I can identify this “angel ascending from the east”, as Jesus Christ Himself, first under the name of Prince Meghavahana, then Pravarasena I, and later yet, as Yuzu Asaph and Saint Issa.    The Eastern God this “Angel” represented was Lord Shiva, whose “seal” is his “third eye”, the power to bring each Age to an end, and to begin another “new” age.  In this verse, Lord Shiva is requested by Jesus Christ, his Son, not to do this.

      Revelation 7:3 “Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.”

       The real message in these repetitive statements is in the details.   “Any tree” (the cross of Christ) has turned into “trees” (many crucifixes all over the Western World).   It is to allow these “trees” (crucifixes) to multiply that the winds of change are not permitted to blow.   The end of this period of religious intolerance will be signaled by the acquiring of a third eye (the “seal” of Lord Shiva) even in the Western World by the end of the 2000 years of the Age of Pisces (the Sea).

as an "Angel from the East"

  The Identity of the 144,000 “Male Virgins”

      Revelation 7:4 “And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.”

       Here the seal of Lord Shiva, his third eye, has morphed into the letter tau, displayed prominently, or even branded on the foreheads or wrists of prominent Essenes.  Even the non-Essene Pharisees wore their phylacteries in this same mid-forehead position.

      Revelation 7:5 “Of the tribe of Judah were sealed twelve thousand.  Of the tribe of Reuben --- Gad --- 6 –Asher…. Nephthalim – Manasses.  7 –Simeon –Levi –Issachar…  8 Zabulon --- Joseph ---Benjamin….

      By naming the twelve tribes of  Israel in the way he has done here, the author of Revelation, who is here Jesus Himself, not John the son of Zebedee, has made it clear that the original meaning is that of Jesus’ Essene associates, and that every other meaning, although valid and meaningful, is only secondary.

       Note that Jesus and the Essenes, the “Bible Editors” have taken the liberty to right some old wrongs.  Levi now has an inheritance with his brethren, and so does Dan.  And Ephriam and Manassah are replaced by their father, Joseph, who no longer gets a “double inheritance”.

  The Original 144,000 “Male Virgins”

        It is not obvious from this first description of the 144,000, that found in Revelation 7:4,5, that we are dealing only with males.  We can assume that each of the tribes named had both women and children.   But Jesus corrects this first impression later in Revelation 14:1-5, his second attempt to provide the clues necessary to identify the Essenes.  (Clues which modern religious leaders of all denominations choose to ignore.)

        Revelation 14:1 “And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Zion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads.”

        It was at or near Qumran that John the Baptist declared Jesus to be “the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world.”  John 1:29,36.  At that time 2 of the Baptist’s disciples decided to follow Jesus, not John, beginning the process that allowed Jesus to accumulate his 144,000 Essene followers.   So we can safely substitute the hill or mesa on which the Qumran monastery was built for “mount Zion” in this text.   It remains unclear here whether the “seal” on the foreheads is still the “eye of Shiva”, or the Hebrew letter Tau, or indeed literally Jesus’ Father’s name (Shiva?), or instead “keeping the Seventh-day Sabbath holy” as a latter-day prophetess has suggested.    The point is, all these possibilities work well if indeed 144,000 Essene followers of Jesus are indicated.

      Revelation 14:2 “And I heard a voice from heaven, --“.  The voice of Matthew 3:17, Mark 1:11, and Luke 3:22.  “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

       Revelation 14:2b “---as the voice of many waters,---“ Here the scene shifts to Kashmir, where Lord Shiva is pictured with the Ganges river pouring through his hair.  His original home is in the Himalaya mountains, where begin all the rivers and water-falls of this area.  And where the rain-storms begin also. –“and—a great thunder:--“

      Revelation 14:2d “—and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps: 3 And they sang as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.”

      Back now in Judea, not Kasmir in the Himalaya mountains, among the showers, thunder, and waterfalls it is deathly quite, with only the sound of a stray cricket here and there, and perhaps a buzzard or eagle flying overhead looking for some dead or not quite dead small mammal on which to lunch.  To the east stretches the vast expanse of the Dead Sea, looking like “ice” with the frosty-appearing salt crystals along its shore line.  As the sun rises in the morning the Holy Essenes praying along its shore near Qumran imagine it is made of both “fire and ice”.   And so they pray for another New Age to dawn.   The “four beasts” of Taurus, Aries, Pisces, and Aquarius, just fading out in the night sky before the sunrise have moved imperceptibly during the night, but far enough so it’s time for the harpers to harp, or the angels to sing (depending on your viewpoint).

       David is always connected with a harp, so those Essenes looking for a “New David” use his favorite instrument to herald the news that they have found their man.    But only those could learn this new song who were prepared to accept an apparent “Son of Shiva” as their New “Messiah of the House of David”.  It was a “hard sell” then, and it will be again, as 2000 years later, “Aquarius” not 2 Fishes is being “harped about”.

      Revelation 14:4 “These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins.   These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth.  These were redeemed from among men, being the first-fruits unto God and to the Lamb.  5 And  in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.”

       Were not modern would-be prophets so obsessed with the idea that each imagines their own group, the ones listening carefully to their predictions, are indeed the remnant here described by Jesus, or, as in this verse, “the first-fruits unto God and to the Lamb” someone in each of these new groups that have sprung up, might have read the fine print!  And realized that practically no group of males throughout the 2000 years history covered by the Age of Pisces has been totally dedicated to celibacy to the extent that the priestly Essenes of Qumran were.   And that no one else has been so careful of what they said as were the Essenes.   In Jesus’ age it was obvious to everyone who knew him that he was an Essene.   And of course other Essenes, his close associates, followed “the Lamb whithersoever he goeth.”  But not for much more than 3 ½ years, however.

       Peter and Paul, two close associates of Jesus, spread some of these Essene principles throughout the Gentile Western World.    Celibacy and circumcision were eliminated as requirements, and even vegetarianism was no longer promoted.   Strict Seventh-day Sabbath keeping waned as Sunday-worship was substituted as an easier way to “please” the Son of God who never once had worshipped on that day.   The point to be made was that he had resurrected from the dead on that day.   And the people very close to him knew this to be true, although they saw him a lot less frequently than they had before he was crucified.

  The 144,000 “Male Virgins” of Kashmir

       Fortunately for the human race the story of the 144,000 does not end with the crucifixion.   It  continued much longer in Kashmir, where an identical group followed the same leader for 64 years, many or most of them celibate also, at least during the years they followed Jesus as priests and kings, promoting vegetarianism and holy living throughout India and even beyond.

  The Return of the 144,000 Essenes  

        Even after the end of the reign of King Pravarasena I of Kashmir, and his sons Hiranya and Toramana, both Essenes, the story of the 144,000 was not yet over.  By means of time-space travel, a group promoting the same principles began again in 1844 AD.   Oddly enough at a time when all the world had forgotten about the Essenes.   Except Flavius Josephus and a few historians contemporary with him.    By the time the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered, a relatively small group of Christians had been attempting to live as the 144,000 Essenes had lived for a hundred years.    But by 1888, even this group had tired of the rigid moral rules and holy lives of the Essenes.

       By 1888, this group, the Seventh-day Adventists were ready to rejoin their more tolerant and less strict neighbors.    No longer like the 144,000 Essenes in any way except Seventh-day Sabbath-keeping and an interest in vegetarianism and “Health Reform”, this group first unofficially then officially rejoined the “great multitude, which no man could number.”  

 The Christians “A Great Multitude”

      Revelation 7:9 “After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands.”

       The “white robes” are here not the “white robes” of the Essenes, who really tried to live holy lives, but a trick devised by the Apostle Paul, with help from Jesus, whom Paul knew personally, because Jesus was fully alive and physically present with Paul.   Not always, but at least enough of the time to get Jesus’ approval on the important issues.   The “trick” is that we, as Gentile Christians, can depend on the Essene life lived by Jesus to be acceptable to his Father.   The real twist to this “trick” is that Jesus’ “Father”, Lord Shiva, has liked us all just fine the way we are.   But we’ll in the end experience the bad results we have earned by our bad behavior. (See Galatians 6:7)

      Revelation 7:10 “And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.”

      In the Age of Aquarius, (the “God” who now “sitteth upon the throne “) just beginning, all religions will have equal status.   If we wish to still be deluded, that’s up to us, individually or all together!

      I began this lecture with the proposition that “God”, assigns to and tolerates from human beings, a lesser standard than “He” himself considers to be the proper standard. Now I will propose that “He” and “His Son” Jesus Christ encourage intellectual integrity in those who find this standard not only tolerable but desirable.

  The Price of Leaving the “Great Multitude”

        In every age there have been one, several, or a relative few people who were willing to step out and say “No” to the prevailing opinion, the one acceptable to the majority.   The price for doing so has always been some sort of social pressure and in some cases, persecution.   Indeed, throughout written history, thousands, and perhaps millions of people have died for beliefs which went against the norm.    It seems to be inherent in the DNA of humans, and in the way we bring up our children, and govern our families, villages, cities, states, and countries, that conformity is valued and rewarded and non-conformity punished, in some cases severely.     Jesus Christ, through visions to His Messenger Ellen G. White, invited her and those who followed her writings, the early Seventh-day Adventists, to step out and make decisions based on intellectual integrity. They were to reject “Cheap Grace” and what the “Great Multitude” of Christians of the mid-19^th century were believing and doing.   By doing so he was inviting them to face persecution, and possibly death.   Some Seventh-day Adventists to this very day believe they face a Death Decree sometime in the future, although the vast majority have abandoned the intellectual integrity that would have confronted them with such a bitter end as an entire organization or class of people.

        In another lecture I have showed that another group of people, a remnant of the Essenes who followed Jesus at Qumran, did indeed voluntarily face death rather than sacrifice their intellectual integrity, and the love of freedom that such integrity engenders.   These Essenes were part of a group of 1000 martyrs at Masada, and incredibly, contrary to the majority opinion of both historical scholars and religious researchers, Jesus Christ himself was among them.

         This other lecture  goes far towards proving my point that although Jesus Christ does support toleration in religion he also supports, and values highly,
