Hurricane Extreme Storm Impacts Home Hurricane Bonnie Home Coastal Change From Lidar Oblique Aerial Photography Related Links Project Contact: Abby Sallenger

HURRICANE BONNIE Hurricane Bonnie, a Category 3 storm, made landfall on August 26, 1998 in southern North Carolina near Cape Fear very close to landfall of both Hurricanes Bertha and Fran in 1996. Even though a powerful storm, damage from Bonnie was much less than Fran which was also Category 3. FIELD SURVEYS Coastal Change From Lidar: USGS, NASA and NOAA acquired laser altimetry surveys of the impacted areas. By comparing these data to earlier surveys, we were able to document coastal changes. Oblique Aerial Photography: USGS acquired oblique aerial photgraphy and video of the impacted areas. These are compared to post-Fran and post-Bertha photographs. Bertha - 7/16/96   Fran - 9/7/96   Bonnie - 8/28/98
