[are weeping!]
This well-known picture of
Mary Magdalene, done by the
artist Georges de la Tour,
["Repenting Magdalene" "Magdalene and
Two Flames" or "Magdalene Wrigtsman" --
late 1630's -- Metro Museum of Art, NYC]
is symbolic of the woman
who cried because she
knew
Jesus, her lover, was about
to leave her [be crucified].
She is holding a skull in her lap, and gazing at
a candle, reflected in the mirror - to symbologists
suggesting how transient is human life - and how
short was her love affair with "the
Christ".
On the following pages we will explore the new
meanings and symbolism NOW POSSIBLE, and
shall I dare say even POPULAR? --
