 CELEBRATION JUSTIFIED!

[Original Title: "What happens when a church prays?"]

SERMON by Pastor Bryan Aalborg

Foster Memorial Seventh-day Adventist Church, Asheville, North Carolina

September 25, 2004

AS IS USUAL AT FOSTER CHURCH, AS THEY FILED IN THROUGH THE DOOR EVERYONE WAS GREETED BY HAPPY PEOPLE WHO ACTED GLAD TO SEE THEM.

WHETHER OR NOT THEY WORE EAR-RINGS, BLUE JEANS OR SUITS, AND NICE DRESSES. AND EVEN AN OCCASIONAL MOTORCYCLE JACKET AND PERSON OF EITHER SEX WITH A MULTI-COLORED HAIR STYLE.

AFTER MULTIMEDIA ANOUNCEMENTS FLASHED ON THE POWER-POINT SCREEN, POPULAR RELIGIOUS MUSIC WAS PLAYED, WITH A BAND AND DRUM ACCOMPANIMENT, AND THE NEWEST COOL KEYBOARD EFFECTS.

THE SINGERS WERE TALENTED, AND RAISED THEIR HANDS, VOICES AND EYES TO THE LORD ON HIGH, AND THEY WERE INDEED -- WELL, LET'S USE A WORD EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS -

LOUD! AND PEOPLE CLAPPED IN APPRECIATION DURING THE MUSIC AND AFTERWARD.

Pastor Bryan Aalborg walked out before his congregation and began to speak.

 "Oh, that was fun!

And I think that God takes great pleasure in seeing us full of JOY and EXUBERANCE,

About WHO He is, and about His PLANS upon this earth that extend all the way into heaven, and reach the endless eons of eternity!

I read an article about the VOLUME LEVEL of PRAISE in heaven.

And when you read Revelation, everything is LOUD!

You read it! You read Revelation! It's a LOUD VOICE!

And it talked about the dynamic of LOUD PRAISE.

I know for some that kind of makes you want to turn the volume down a little bit,

but it's IN THE BIBLE --

And if you recall from weeks previously -- we had the video, from week to week, you know -- Be STILL and know that I am God - although the music was not totally congruent with the words - the message was very impacting.

There are times to just be STILL and just HEAR GOD'S VOICE.

And at other times it's just HONORING,

And the most appropriate thing we can do in front of this mission before a POWERFUL GOD is just LET IT GO, with everything we have,

And unless I'm way off base,

I think that God enjoyed the last fifteen or twenty minutes here from Foster!"

[Loud clapping from the congregation!]

Bob's BACKGROUND and COMMENTARY: At the outset let me make clear that I am NOT the "Bob" of Pastor Bryan's story, but by name is BOB.... Dr. BOB Holt, md///.As a graduate from Loma Linda University School of Medicine and School of Health [class of 1971], I have attended both the big Campus University Church, and also the "Hill Church" with its superb choir that sang only the most classical religious music as chosen by Director Richard Hammond.

The music I heard in Foster on September 25 would not only cause Director Hammond physical pain, but would put him in a state of mind where he could not hear or understand anything Pastor Aalborg might say afterwards.

Indeed, I'm sure he would have found some excuse to leave this church during the music pre-service, and never come back!

Since I left Loma Linda University in 1972, I have returned periodically for Medical Continued Education.

And on one of these visits I attended the Colton "Celebration" Church back in the late 1970's or early 1980's when this was a very new thing in Adventism.

This "Celebration" movement within Adventism increased in momentum over the years, and by the late 1980's, and early 1990's it had the full blessing of the Carolina Conference under the leadership of Pastor Robert Folkinburg, who eventually became General Conference President of Seventh-day Adventists.

So pastor Bryan Aalborg has nothing to fear now from his church, the Adventist Church, for being so "enthusiastic".

EXPLANATION and DISCLAIMER: The sermon here by Pastor Aalborg is as he preached it. I not only listened to it live, but also picked up a taped copy of the sermon as supplied to all interested people who come to this church.

Pastor Aalborg knows I intend to put the "Bob's Prayer" part of this sermon on the Internet. But I did not tell him I am putting the rest of the sermon, up to his appeal to the church to pray six months as Bob did, also on the Internet. But he is after all a preacher and an evangelist, and the more who hear him, the better he likes it.

What he is NOT AT ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR, and indeed will probably be quite uncomfortable with, is my own explanations and historical comments about the "Celebration Movement" in Adventism, and other COMMENTS that will seem quite HERETICAL to almost everone who reads them! I was not taught many of these things by Pastor Aalborg nor by the Seventh-day Adventist church.....Dr. Bob Holt, MD ..10-24-2004
