Like the ESSENES 19 centuries before them developed a cipher - language in which certain words and phrases always stood for or meant other words or phrases so reliably that other Essenes (and later Adventists) always knew what was meant although "outsiders" were hearing something else.
THUS WHEN JESUS, AS AN ESSENE MESSIAH SAID TO THOMAS AND HIS OTHER LISTENERS IN JOHN !$:1-6 "I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE, THE OTHER LISTENING ESSENES UNDERSTOOD HIM TO SAY I represent and support the Essene "WAY" (the Essene practices described in their scrolls) the "TRUTH" (a value judgment that this was indeed the absolute religious "Truth") and the "LIFE" (like the other Essenes with him, they were all entitled to "Eternal Life") but if they were excommunicated, cast out, they were "DEAD". "NO ONE COMETH TO THE FATHER BUT BY ME" IS ACTUALLY ONLY A STATEMENT OF HIS POSITION AS AN ESSENE MESSIAH
Of these same three words, "Way", "Truth", and "Life" only "Truth" sometimes qualified as "Present Truth" retains its former Essene cipher-meaning in Adventism! |

Morris Venden Popular Adventist speaker, pastor, and Evangelist who introduced me in the late 1960s to the concept of alternate meanings for religious phrases -- said Pastor Venden to his usual listening group of teenagers, young adults, and academy and college and university students --- "falling on the Rock" does not mean an accident, when used in a sermon "being covered by the Blood" does not mean you are a gory mess dripping with real blood, "coming to Jesus" does not imply that you are about to die and go to heaven, "being crucified with Christ" is neither as painful or difficult as it sounds, and "I am the vine, and ye are the branches" does not mean you have to become a bunch of grapes.
Pastor Venden was connected to a sexual scandal for many years but became one of the foremost Adventist advocates of the Doctrine of "Righteousness by Faith Alone", which is opposite to what I now emphasize, but he was a talented speaker, well-known Adventist author, and Pastor of the Azure Hills Seventh-day Adventist Church in Redlands, California for many years. For a while he was also an associate speaker for the Voice of Prophecy radio and TV programs. He died on February 10, 2013 in College Place, Washington succumbing to FTD (Frontotemporal Dementia). |

How Alan Turing, the gay mathematical genius, was finally able to decipher the German Enigma codes. THE GERMANS DURING WORLD WAR II WERE CODING ALL THEIR MESSAGES, CHANGING THEM SO THEY COULD NOT BE READ AND UNDERSTOOD.
Turing, with his small group of British co-workers, which included one young woman, over several years time constructed this wonderful machine, the fore-runner of today's computers, that could cut down on the possibilities one-by-one, but not enough time was available each day before the Enigma machines used by the Germans changed the ciphers at midnight. At a meal in a restaurant, two women in Turing's group were talking to each other about the messages they received in German each day on the radio, and one remarked to each other that the first message each day ALWAYS gave that day's WEATHER REPORT, and ended with HEIL HITLER. Turing was listening and realized that this information could cost the Germans their advantage and perhaps the war. He and his fellow decoders rushed to their hidden lab, put into their computer the weather report for that day, and "Heil Hitler". With this many clearly identified letters, the computer had enough of a start on the remaining unknown possible matches to be able to finish that day's message in the allotted time. From then on, the decoders could decode the Germans' messages to their troops and navy, but realizing that the Germans would instantly change the system once they knew, the British kept their success in decoding a secret for the rest of World War II. They invented a deceptive cover story for those selected instances when they actually used the information they knew to win decisive victories. By acting PREDICTABLY, like ROBOTS, the Germans had unwittingly given the British decoders the edge they needed to win the war two years earlier than otherwise, and saved an estimated 14 million lives. In line with what I'm discovering here, I can assume that Jesus and or his unseen associates were sitting at that restaurant table with Alan Turing and his fellow mathematical problem-solvers.
Adventist cipher-mistakes, how these caused the Church to "Stumble"
Partly as a result of Ellen G. White's early visions, and their adoption of Hiram Edson's "vision in a corn-field" of Jesus as a Jewish High Priest ministering in a Heavenly Sanctuary, the Millerites who later became the first members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church came to think of themselves as the Real Israel. God had, in their minds, rejected the former Israel that had rejected Jesus and allowed him to be crucified, and now Seventh-day Adventists were the True Israel, the special beloved children of God that Jesus would come and get and carry to the New Jerusalem at his "Second Coming". The Seventh-day Adventists had set up a new cipher. A new "double-meaning", and one they really liked and appreciated. Whenever Ellen White had a vision about ISRAEL, to her listeners, and quite likely to herself also, the vision was about Seventh-day Adventists, the "New Israel" not the "Old Israel" that had rejected Christ at the cross. Of course Jesus knew they would do this, and indeed were doing this, and the carefully selected wording of the passages in Ellen's visions that allowed this delusion to become widespread show Jesus was not aiding this false-hood but indeed making at least a small effort to prevent it. But the principle of Mark 4:9-12 is his policy, the policy of Jesus. He allows those who can't hear to remain deaf -- and those leaders who remain blind to lead their congregations into the ditch! In Ellen's later visions, Jesus and his "Angels" actually added other details that would keep some Adventists terrified for a major part of their lifetimes, and finally result in the debacle brought about by Vernon Howell aka "David Koresh" in Waco, Texas on April 19, 1993.
Early Writings page 15 "The living saints, 144,000 in number, knew and understood the voice, while the wicked thought it was thunder and an earthquake." Here, to Ellen and her readers: "living saints" = Adventists the 144,000 also were Adventists wrong interpretations of these ciphers! The rest of that page is full of clues these were Jews, but no Adventist can see these clues for what they are -- Early Writings page 16 "Here on the sea of glass the 144,000 stood in a perfect square--they were all clothed with a glorious white mantle from their shoulders to their feet." The "sea of glass" is the Dead Sea, crusted with salt, with it's southernmost end near Masada almost solid like ice, "mixed with fire" gives its appearance at sunset. And the people clothed in white are Essenes. No one knew much about the Essenes in 1844, when Ellen had this vision. But present-day "blindness" of Adventists to this real meaning was inexcusable after the 1950s. "Sea of Glass" = Dead Sea 144,000 clothed with a white mantle = Essenes continued wrong interpretation, Seventh-day Adventists as the "Real Israel" Early Writings page 19 "--as we were about to enter the holy temple, Jesus raised His lovely voice and said, "Only the 144,000 enter this place," and we shouted. "Alleluia." "Only the 144,000 enter = Jews NOT Adventists "we shouted 'Alleluia' = Pentecostals NOT Adventists in spite of continued clues otherwise, Seventh-day Adventists still see themselves as "Real Israel" Early Writings page 34 "The Israel of God stood with their eyes fixed upward, listening to the words as they came from the mouth of Jehovah--" Why should Adventists, Trinitarians by the 1950s, be listening to anything Jehovah, the monotheistic Jewish God, has to say? Only because we're still certain that we're the "True Israel of God!"
