Dr. Robert Holt, MD is a retired

    EMERGENCY     ROOM PHYSICIAN

BUT he also has a degree in "Health Education" -- an MPH degree from Loma University's "School of Health". Also, Dr. Holt has used this degree and the knowledge he  obtained at this University throughout 20+ years of Medical Practice.   And is still using it, now free of charge, since he retired from active practice in 1998.

The Amino Acid Taurine has been packaged in recent years as a major component (along with Caffeine) in all sorts of ENERGY drinks, as pictured above.  These have become very useful to US troops in training and in combat, whose lives may depend on staying awake-- and by racing drivers and long distance truck drivers -- for similar reasons.  Another group who may find them useful are people on diets to lose weight, who tend to use "sugar free" versions of these same drinks to help them "burn off" calories instead of "wearing them".

A major hazard in using Caffeine alone in such drinks is that the stimulant effect of Caffeine wears of in 3 to 4 hours, and a person depending on this effect may suffer a sudden let down and fall asleep unexpectedly.  Taurine and sometimes other Amino acid additives can extend the stimulant effect of Caffeine to 5 hours or more and make the let down less dramatic and more predictable.

Although Dr. Robert F. Holt MD, MPH received a degree in Health Administration and Health Education from the above pictured school, Loma Linda University School of Health and an MD degree from that same MEDICAL SCHOOL, his advice on this WEB PAGE in no way represents those schools' CURRENT TEACHINGS on any subject, and they are in no way responsible for what Dr, Holt has written here!  Let the READER beware!  If your own doctor or other health adviser advises otherwise, it may be far safer to follow their advice.  Dr. Holt no longer diagnoses and treats any type of diseases and health conditions.  He retired from active practice in 1998.

On my previous page in this series I suggested another reason for eating and drinking foods and drinks containing Taurine -- other than mixed with Caffeine to stay awake or to lose weight in a weight -loss diet.  I suggested that there may be a large number of people who are TAURINE DEFICIENT for various reasons, some of these reasons not economic, but religious and/or ethical in nature.

Many of these people may have distressing symptoms -- memory loss, loss of activities like walking or driving a car, and loss of their ability to smell and taste food properly.  Even visual acuity and balance can be adversely affected in a person who is truly and seriously TAURINE DEFICIENT.
This young man has lots of energy. He can if he wishes to, hold down a paying job.

He can walk as far and as fast as he wants or needs to, and he sleeps well at night.

He is hungry at mealtime and his food tastes and smells good to him.

He can remember a list of quite a few items and comes back from the store with those items and perhaps a few more.

He is not a dangerous driver, knows how to use a GPS and a map, and knows where he is locally -- and can find his way home.

He eats MEAT, and is NOT Taurine-deficient, although he has plenty of RISK in other areas of his DIET and his LIFE!

One or both of these persons is always tired.

Walking is difficult, so they would rather drive.

One or both sleep most of the time, or don't sleep at night.

Food is tasteless, and smell is very poor to non-existent.

MEMORY is deteriorating and words must be searched for

Dangerous drivers for lots of reasons. Often get lost even in familiar territory.

One or BOTH may be Taurine deficient, more likely if they eat little or no MEAT in their diet.

How to diagnose and Treat Taurine Deficiency.

Simple and Quick!  Buy some and take it every day for at least two weeks and hopefully much longer.  By one month you'll know you were deficient BECAUSE:

Your FOOD will taste better.

You'll be able to SMELL flowers and other smells that you haven't been able to smell for months or years.

Your MEMORY will slowly improve and LISTS will become possible without writing everything down.

OLDER MEMORIES will begin to return.  They were "there" all along, but your "broken" mind wouldn't let you connect with them.  Think of Taurine as a MIND Mechanic -- a "Fixer" of broken minds!

DOSE:500mg Daily

My suggestion

Break up tablet and chew  up 1/3 tablet morning, noon and night.

Besides the immediate and obvious increased alertness when combined with Caffeine, Taurine extends this effect and enhances it.

Longer term effects are brought about by Taurine's being a part of important biochemical processes in all nerves throughout the body, including the brain, and allowing and enhancing repair to damaged nerves.  What would take much longer without Taurine is now accomplished much faster.

And what would perhaps not happen at all, is now possible.

Lab studies with rats, monkeys, etc. show that cell borders and membranes in both muscles and nerves and where they interact with each other are where such actions take place.

Muscle health all over the body is enhanced by having enough Taurine in the body, including but not limited to heart muscle.

Also animal studies suggest that heart rate is more stable and predictable with enough or excess Taurine.  Which may counteract a possible adverse affect by Caffeine.

The possible effect of Taurine in helping the body build and repair muscle causes it to be included in most "body building" preparations, which is now a source of great income and profit in not only "body building" and "health food" stores but also big chains like WalMart.

The large safety margin for ingesting Taurine helps. Up to 3000 mg (3 grams) can be safely ingested in a day.
