I stumbled across one of the first copies of Dr. Barbara Thiering's Book Jesus and the Riddle of the Dead Sea Scrolls for sale in a bookstore I usually browsed through in the summer of 1992. As I remember I believe it was the only one on the shelf, a "trial copy" sent out to the book stores to see if there is any demand for the book. I read a few pages, and bought it immediately. Here were the answers to all my questions of 50+ years! Here was a believable Jesus, the "Truly Human Jesus" that Ellen White had timidly introduced to the disappointed Millerites in 1844 to 1850, the Jesus who could indeed have been a High Priest because he was not "God" but a man. A man who struggled, and sweat, and had a girlfriend, and occasionally made mistakes of judgment like the rest of us. I got out my ER schedule, calculated the amount of extra money I needed to make to buy a plane ticket to Israel, and by November was on my way. I took my copy of Dr. Thiering's book with me in my luggage to Israel, and it's a good thing I did, because my journey took me to desert places hardly any other tourists were visiting, and even my taxi drivers had to be told how to get to some of these locations! | ||||||||||||
