“Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the STAR appeared. the king had heard these things, he was troubled, sand all Jerusalem with him.

And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child, and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also."

When they had heard the king they departed; and lo, the STAR, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

When they SAW THE STAR, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy."

“And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way."

Angel Message to Essene High Priest Zacharias Luke 1:5

In the days of Herod the King: SO - Before 4 BC and the death of Herod the Great

Zacharias is not called a High Priest, but he was, because his bloodline is traced

here back to Abias (Abiathar), an important bloodline that the Essenes were

preserving in the Qumran area and the Essene Quarter near Herod's temple.

Zacharias is also shown here to be a High Priest by the ceremony he is performing

which is a Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) ceremony (Luke 1:8-10)

This is only done by a High Priest -- whose "lot" is chosen when he became

the High Priest -- there was no lottery system for choosing ordinary priests to

offer incense before the Lord (NOT on the "Altar of Incense" BUT directly

before the Lord inside the veil of the "Most Holy Place") -- only on YOM

KIPPUR would the "whole multitude" be waiting outside -- Luke 1:10

IMPORTANCE: Understanding the exact occasion or ceremony allows

us to set the CORRECT initial DATE -- Sept - October of the year John

the Baptist was CONCEIVED!

That Elizabeth was "of the Daughters of Aaron" (Luke 1:5) is important because

this makes her a Levite, of the Tribe of Levi not of the Tribe of Judah --

So either Mary the mother of Jesus WAS NOT her literal COUSIN, OR

if Mary was a Levite, one of the TWO Bible genealogies used by Catholics

to prove Mary was a direct descendent of King David is a DECEPTION.

That both Zacharias and his wife Elizabeth were Essenes is strongly

inferred by Luke 1:6 "And they were both RIGHTEOUS before God,

walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless."

One has to here use one's good sense and critical ability, and

realize that NO priest offering incense before God in his "temple"

would be allowed to do so to which these words would not apply

in the USUAL sense -- it would be fool-hardy and dangerous for

an evil or unrighteous priest, who paid no attention to Jewish

"commandments and ordinances" to attempt what Zacharias

was here about to do.  SO: Luke is hinting that further, more

rigid and detailed "commandments and ordinances" are

involved, those of the ESSENES, whose requirements

included that Zacharias must be celibate at the time he

was doing this, and could not even think about performing

sexual intercourse while he was in the "Most Holy Place."

IMPORTANT because it allows us to understand why

Elizabeth his wife was "barren".  (No sex, no pregnancy!)

The Cause of no Pregnancy for Elizabeth

Luke is not being extremely clear and forthright here about the existence of the Essenes and that he and Jesus were both Essenes because he was the willing participant in a conspiracy to make the life of Jesus a "MAGICAL LIFE" not a typical Essene life but slightly altered because Jesus was a "Privileged Essene" and Essene Messiah.  He was writing his books, his Gospel and Acts partly for Gentiles and for us in the 21st century.

Thus we are ALLOWED TO BELIEVE that Elizabeth had some physical disorder that did not allow her to become PREGNANT in spite of weekly or monthly sexual intercourse of the usual type that a Jewish Rabbi of today might believe normal or even insist on as one of his duties and privileges as a Jew and a Rabbi.  All Jews then and now feel it to be a duty to God and Judaism to produce Jewish sons and daughters.

NOT SO in the case of the Essen High Priest Zacharias and his wife Elizabeth. The rule was no sex for him until he was almost 40 years old.  And no sex for her until he was allowed to have a child with her willing participation.  So we MUST READ Luke 1:7 with these restrictions in mind.

Luke 1:7 "And they had no child, because that Elizabeth was barren (not having anyone to make her pregnant), and they both were well stricken in years (it was time for them to have a son, Zacharias being about 40 years old or more)."

Zacharias the Essene High Priest has a problem now in verse 8 because it's time for the Yom Kippur ceremony and he's having some difficulty keeping sex, and having a son, and his lonely wife Elizabeth out of his mind as he's performing a ceremony in which none of these thoughts and concerns should be indulged.  And he meets an angel.

Luke 1:11 "And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

12 "And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him." (For good reason -- God may slay him for "improper thoughts and desires, and he might die right there and then, and another priest might have to pull his corpse out of the "Most Holy Place" by the rope tied around one ankle for just such an occasion by all Jewish priests officiating in this ceremony)

Luke 1:13 "But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias, for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John."

IMPORTANCE: Now we can know that Zacharias is free from his Essene High Priestly duties and by Essene custom can have sex with his wife in December of that year, hopefully causing her to conceive, the child "John" to be born the following September, one year following the announcement by the angel on Yom Kippur.

WE STILL DON'T KNOW THE YEAR, AND WON'T UNTIL WE KNOW ABOUT THE REAL YEAR OF THE "STAR OF BETHLEHEM" -- WE COUNT BACKWARDS FROM THAT CRUCIAL YEAR TO DETERMINE WHEN JOHN WAS CONCEIVED!

Bethlehem STAR Date Established by Astronomy

and the Babylonian Letter

Here I'm not going to duplicate all of the material that surrounds this page, just recommend that you refer to it to establish that this triple conjunction occurs only once every 800 years and was therefore very important to the Astrologers of Babylon, Judea, Qumran and the Essenes, and all over the Roman Empire.  Although these three conjunctions do not provide an exact date, they do nail down the year of the WISE MEN'S JOURNEY and JESUS' BIRTH to 7 BC.  (Matt.2:1-15)

And now we can return to Luke chapter 1 knowing that Elizabeth had to be pregnant with John the Baptist during most of 8 BC.

Annunciation to Mary in June of 8 BC

Luke 1:21 "And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple." (Some knew of his potentially LETHAL concerns with the necessity of making Elizabeth pregnant, or not having a son to carry on his family name, and that of Abiathar his ancestor -- PERHAPS God had killed him for thinking about sexual intercourse in the "Most Holy Place"!)

22 "And when he came out, he could not speak unto them:--(now relieved by the angel of his High Priestly duties, he had also lost his authority to "speak" as a High Priest) --and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple (the "vision" of becoming a father and having a son): for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless." (a charade or "play" that Zacharias maintains until the circumcision of his son John a year later)

23 "And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house."

Having established, I hope, that Zacharias was an Essene High Priest, not a regular Jewish High Priest at Herod's Temple in Jerusalem, we can know where Zacharias' house was, for its ruins can still be seen 3 KM South of the Qumran Monastery at Ain Feshkha. One can assume that the new Essene High Priest who replaced him would live in the Monastery with the other "monks" who lived celibate lives there "without women and without love" as some contemporary historian, perhaps Pliny the Elder, has said.

The assumption that Zacharias was an Essene High Priest is reinforced by not being able to find his name listed in various lists of Jewish High Priests in that time frame.

December 9 BC Elizabeth conceives,

with minor "help" by Zacharias

Luke 1:24 "And after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and hid herself five months --"  (We can assume that she "hid herself" at the same house where her husband Zacharias was living, at Ain Feshkha, 3 KM South of the Qumran monastery)

May, 8 BC Elizabeth Definitely Pregnant!

Luke 1:26 "And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth.  27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary."

Now it's important here to realize that Luke is a Greek writer writing in the Roman Empire using a Roman calendar and Roman time-keeping customs.  The 6th month is June, and not necessarily the 6th month of Elizabeth's pregnancy.  Not important here, but will be later!

Luke 1:36 (After a chat with Mary in which he predicts her forthcoming pregnancy, Gabriel says) "And behold thy cousin Elizabeth (Essene "cousin" not biological cousin), she hath conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her (conceived in December of 9 BC), who was called barren." (Ha, ha --no sex, no kids!)

39 "And Mary arose in those days, (terms such as "in those days" had a specific meaning to the Essenes, in this case "in June" of a specific Essene calendar), and went into the hill country of Juda; ("hill country of Juda" would seem to us to be uphill from either Bethlehem or Jerusalem, or even, to the naive from Nazareth in Galilee-- but in this case it's downhill to the Qumran area!)

40 "And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elizabeth.  41 And it came to pass, that, when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost; 42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou above women---etc."

So we can definitely date the ANNUNCIATION

(what Elizabeth said)

to June of 8 BC

not at Nazareth, but

at Ain Feshkha a

mere 3 KM south of Qumran!

From Elizabeth's "House" to Mary's "House" a walk of 2 KM!

Luke 1:56 "And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house."

Now if you've paid any attention to what I've shown you thus far, the knowledge should be cumulative, and you will have realized that Elizabeth and Mary are living together not in Nazareth in Galilee, but in the Qumran area, indeed only 3 KM South of the Qumran monastery, where another Essene High Priest is performing Zacharias' duties while he is contemplating approaching fatherhood.

Mary, on the other hand, at the tender age of 16 1/2 years old (not 14, as the Catholics have presumed) is putting in her required 3 months of "morning sickness", retching and vomiting and perhaps wishing she was not pregnant.

Joseph shows up, her betrothed, and they get married, Mary and he (not recorded in the Luke account but in Matthew.

Matthew 1:19 "Then Joseph her husband, being a just man (that means "Essene" also, as does "righteous" in Luke), and not willing to make her a publick example (have her stoned, as was the religious law), was minded to put her away privily,

(After all, Mary is living down here at or near Qumran with Elizabeth for at least three months, retching and vomiting, and he, Joseph, is in Nazareth, wherever that might be, and how can he account for her being pregnant?  He toys with an explanation -- it's NOT HIS?  Divorce this pregnant TEEN-AGER at Elizabeth's house, let her get this baby ADOPTED BY THE ESSENES, practically NEXT DOOR, and let him go find some other teen-ager who can give him a kid he can be sure is his!)

20 "But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost."

September of 8 BC (or before)

Essene Marriage of Joseph and Mary

(Performed no doubt by Zacharias the High Priest)

Birth of Jesus Christ at

 the House of the Queen

1 KM  from the Qumran Monastery

March of 7 BC

Now we have to realize that King James' translators didn't know what you know because I've just showed you, and I know everything, so they have butchered Luke 1:56 by forgetting Luke's Roman time-keeping system demonstrated in Luke 1:26, and shortening Mary's stay in the Qumram area to 3 months when she actually stayed with Elizabeth all nine months of her pregnancy, watching John being born in September, and helping Elizabeth with baby John until March of 7 BC.

All these week-long 90 mile jaunts back and forth to Nazareth in Galilee weren't necessary for these dynastic Essene families of Joseph and Zacharias the Essene High Priest, and they were not done.

Quaint as the movie and traditional Christian picture might be of a pregnant virgin Mary jigging up and down on the back of a fat little donkey mile after mile and day after day, and sleeping night after night in a blanket in the bushes under the stars with her worried husband might be, its not what really happened.  Even without all those extra "older brothers", the "sort of" brothers of Jesus lined up along the road, which Catholic tradition has added to keep Mary "pure" and "ever a virgin", the imaginary trip would be torture to a real 16 1/2 year old TEEN-AGER on her first pregnancy.  A term pregnancy at this point, 9 months along, with her water about to break, and mid-wives pretty scarce along these bandit-ridden roads.

The truth of the matter is that Mary had to walk all of 2 KM when her water broke, from Elizabeth's house at Ain Feskha, to the "House of the Queen", also called "The Manger" because animals were stabled there, 1 KM South of the Qumran monastery.   Pretty hot in the daytime, even in March.   But the little wooden house with its extensive animal shelters was located in a Date-Palm Orchard, and at night was reasonably cool.

Luke 1:56 (Correct reading) "And Mary abode with her (Elizabeth) UNTIL about the THIRD MONTH (March of 7 BC), "and returned to her own home." (The "House of the Queen" --      1 KM from Qumran -- 2 KM from Elizabeth's home)

and there was born Jesus,

Savior of the World

(considered to be illegitimate by some)

b"Pesher Locations"

Connected with the Birth of Christ

(and what one can assume from walking down one "Garden Path!)

I've pretty well established in the above narrative that there was no 90 mile journey from Nazareth in Galilee (which in that era was only a Jewish suburb of the Greek City of Sepphoris, and was so unimpressive that Josephus fails to mention it in his Wars of the Jews.  But there was indeed a place the Essenes at Qumran called "Nazareth".   It was located very near to the city of Bethlehem, about 7 miles along a rocky difficult to walk trail within sight of the Brook Kidron from the Dead Sea Area,

When one travelled in a westerly direction from this Essene Nazareth towards Qumran and Essene Heaven, one reached the Essene Capernaum the ruins of which are now called by the Arab name Kherbit Mazin.  Here the Essenes ran a Religious Tourist  Enterprise that fished for men not fishes, because the water in the Dead Sea is too salty for fish, and most other living things to actually survive in for more than an hour or so.  There they had fishermen originally doing the same thing in Galilee talking Galilean as they fished, so the whole area could be and was known as Galilee.  Puzzling of course to us later readers of the Gospels who can't understand how Jesus could get around so fast and freely between Judaea and Galilee.  Which was now 6 KM South of Qumran.  With the Sea of Galilee only a hundred yards or so from the monastery.

Mar Saba is the current name for what was once the Essene Nazareth. Now, as back then, no women are allowed to stay in the Monastery that still exists at Mar Saba, maintained by the Greek Orthodox Church.   This is the location where Joseph, the father of Jesus spent a lot of his time about the time he married Jesus' mother Mary when she was 3 month's pregnant.   I'm quite certain he was the father of the child he considered not claiming as his own because it was the custom of the Essenes that were allowed to marry, of which Joseph belonged to this group, as a descendent of King David, to have three wedding-related ceremonies, quite well documented in Josephus' comments about the Essenes.

The central ceremony, called a trial marriage, was necessary for Essenes, because by their laws they were only allowed one wife, not several, as the rest of the Jews were allowed.  With a number of wives, like Herod the Great had in Jesus' era -- if one wife was "barren", it was no big deal.  Other wives could provide important men with the heirs and children they desired.  If an Essene's trial marriage failed to result in a child, then the betrothal was annulled, the dowry returned if one was involved, and the barren daughter returned to her parents or to her Essene order of Nuns, whichever might be the case.   Three years was the usual limit for these trial marriages according to Josephus.

These three ceremonies are at least mentioned in the case of Joseph and Mary, if you combine the Matthew and Luke stories, and assume that one occurred in the Luke account, which he fails to mention for reasons I made plain in my above account.  He's writing for Gentiles who wish to believe in a Magical Jesus with a Magical Mother not for Jews like Matthew who demand to know "Who's your daddy?"

Matthew's first and third ceremony are found in Matthew 1:18 "--Mary was espoused to Joseph" and Matthew 1:20 "Joseph, thou son of David--take unto thee Mary thy wife."

Luke acknowledges that Mary is espoused (Ceremony 1) to Joseph in Luke 1:27 "espoused to a man named Joseph".  They're still just "espoused", not really married, but his "wife" anyway in Luke 2:5 "To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child."

THE POINT, In Matthew, Jesus was born to a married couple.  In Luke, he was born to an "espoused couple".  And It's Luke that gives the Catholic Church all the ammunition it needs to "prove" that Mary never had sex with anyone and that's why she's accepted in Heaven where only celibates can live!

However, if we accept that Mary lived in or near the Essene "Nazareth", then who else but her "espoused" Joseph would accompany her down that mountainous bandit-ridden trail to Elizabeth's house in the hill country of Juda at the very time, June of 8 BC, when she becomes wonderfully and mysteriously pregnant?

And this, according to Essene custom documented by Josephus, was the time to begin their Essene "trial marriage".  I'm going to assume that Zacharias, who's living there in "Elizabeth's house" with her performed both the second and third Essene "Marriage Ceremonies", the second (hopefully) before Mary started her three months retching and vomiting" and the third after she stopped doing this in September.

So Matthew, the Jew, to whom such things were important, was RIGHT, these two were indeed married when Jesus was born.  A legitimate son of both Joseph and God, but perhaps not fully Divine!

But then, it did take about 300 years for the rest of us to fully understand the Divinity of Christ!

(And another 1700 years for Dr. Barbara Thiering PhD, and myself, and a relatively few others to FULLY UNDERSTAND the HUMANITY of Christ!)       Dr. Robert F. Holt MD, MPH  Dec. 7, 2014
