         Worshipping the Tolerant God

      Revelation 7:11 “And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders  and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God.”

      The usual assumption is that the God being worshipped here is Yahweh – Jehovah.  The “Jealous God” of the Ten Commandments.    Thought to be identical with Allah, Whose promise of 50 or more virgins to whoever becomes a Martyr in His Name is well known among suicide-prone Arab youth.   To these youth, to die while also killing Jews and Americans, and those others who may side with us against Al Quida and the Immams is the ultimate honor which will make their otherwise worthless life worthwhile. To them, the greatest honor in recent years belongs to those responsible for crashing US jetliners into the twin towers of the World Trade Center on 9-11-2001.

        Jihad is Biblical, Martyrdom is taught in both the Old and New Testaments, and the author of the Book of Revelation is here honoring such martyrs.   But we will discover also that this same author was a Man of Peace and never Himself killed another man in person-to-person conflict.  His own God was the Tolerant God Lord Shiva who allows all religions to be practiced freely without interference.

     The four beasts are again the figures of the Zodiac in Revelation 7:11, and the one who sits on the throne is alternately Lord Shiva, or “Aquarius”, the ultimate Zodiac “sign” of the “Age of Aquarius”, and Jesus Christ who rules the earth for 2000+ years under the authority of both.

      Revelation 7:12 “Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever.   Amen.”

      The Essene code meaning of “forever” is for one entire “Age”, 2000 years.  “Forever and ever” means “more than 2000 years”.

      Revelation 7:13 “And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes?   And whence came they?”

        Revelation 7:14 “And I said unto them, Sir, thou knowest.  And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and have made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”  The greatest group of “Martyrs” who chose to be martyrs in the traditional sense in Jewish history were those at Masada in 73 AD.

     Revelation 7:15 “Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.” (at Masada) 16 “They shall hunger no more,(the food stored at Masada) neither thirst any more (the mammoth cisterns); neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.” 17 “For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.”

       The “Lamb which is in the midst of the throne” is here Jesus Christ, as in the rest of the New Testament Book of Revelation. We shall find here numerous clues that he was not only at Masada in spirit, but there bodily, living in the quarters of Herod the Great. It is his highly stylized and apocalyptic account of what happened there in 73 AD that we are now reading in Revelation 7, 15 and 16.

      I finally chased it down in Miami, Florida, and in my own Bible!   My name is Doctor Robert F. Holt, MD, for 25+ years an Emergency Room Physician, mostly in Eastern North Carolina.    I spent a lot of money in my most productive years chasing down Bible Truth!

      I first became interested in the idea that Jesus might indeed have been at Masada because of a book written by an Australian author named Donovan Joyce. But I knew about Masada long before that.  It’s a famous story!

      I visited Masada in 1983 on my first trip to the Holy Land on a tour.   And have revisited it several times since then.    It is an impressive trip that no one who goes to visit Israel should miss.  Thousands visit this site every year.  All those who have visited Masada, and millions who have never been there know the story of the 1000 Jewish Zealots and their families who died for freedom from “Iron Rome”!  But almost nobody has any idea that Jesus Christ, the “Man of Peace” was there also!

        I say “almost nobody”, because those who bought and read Donovan Joyce’s book  The Jesus Scroll back in 1973, when it was published in Australia and the United States read the Truth!  Jesus Christ, under the name of Yeshua ben Ya’acob ben Gennesareth was there up until the very last - in 73 AD.  

        Donovan Joyce went to Israel while Yigael Yadin was still excavating.   And perhaps predictably, if not unjustly, was not allowed to go to Masada while the archaeological excavation was still going on.   But Joyce claims he met a professor in the airport bathroom who showed him a scroll hidden in  a clay jar the professor had dug up at Masada, then hidden in his baggage.  He wanted Joyce’s help in smuggling the stolen scroll out of Israel. 

        The “smuggler”, who knew Aramaic, read the scroll to Joyce.    He did this because Donovan Joyce was not even willing to consider helping him smuggle the scroll out of the country without knowing what he was risking time in jail for, in case they were caught.  After a week or so, Joyce realized he would not get to see Masada, and left without helping the smuggler.  A late plane and midnight ride switch made it unnecessary.

       The author of the scroll called himself Yeshua ben Ya’acob ben Gennesereth.  He said he was now 80 years old, and the last legitimate king of Israel.   He was making this last stand at Masada with the other Zealots defending this fortress.  Yeshua also said he had watched as his own son was crucified by the Roman’s below on the plain. On the morrow, he was certain that the fire started by the Romans would burn through the wooden defense wall the Zealots had erected behind the breach in the stone wall.

        The author of the Aramaic scroll said that since the defenders of Masada were outnumbered, and the Romans would attack during the Sabbath hours, they had decided on suicide rather than be captured and tortured and watch their women abused. Joyce claimed in his book that he had seen not only this scroll, but also the broken clay jar it had been buried in, wrapped in a towel by the thieving professor.  The last he saw of the professor, he was hurrying towards a Russian plane at a fueling stopover. No one has ever seen or heard of this scroll since then.

      Back when Joyce was trying to make sense of what he had heard and seen in Israel, the mid 1960’s, the idea that Jesus might have been married, and had a child that might be old enough to be crucified in 73 AD was indeed a novel one.  If not totally preposterous!  Donovan Joyce spends much of his book explaining why this may indeed have been the case.

          “Holy Blood/Holy Grail” has been a best seller for many years. It was followed by “Messianic Legacy”, which also proposed a married Jesus. “Was Jesus Married?” by Prof. Wm. Phipps, a Presbyterian minister, created a stir.  Finally, “Jesus and the Riddle of the Dead Sea Scrolls” settled it for serious researchers allowed to consider it possible!

 

The “Whistle-blower!  Dr. Barbara Thiering PhD. And Her Book!

       “ Mary Magdalene was Jesus’ Essene wife at Qumran!” The Gospel Pesher  explained in her book by Dr. Barbara Thiering, PhD shows the following details. Gospels and Acts.  Jesus and Mary Magdalene were engaged on June 6, 30 AD at 6 PM.  They began their “Trial Marriage” on September 22, 30 AD at 6 PM.   Their “Final Marriage” was celebrated on March 19, 33 AD at midnight. They had a daughter, Tamar, born in 34 AD, a son, Jesus Justus in 37 AD, and a son Joses in 44 AD!   Those who can accept Thiering’s research, and the “Gospel Pesher” she reveals can see that it was Jesus Justus, the first son of Jesus (Yeshua ben Ya’acob ben Gennessareth) that was crucified at Masada.   In full view of his father watching from the top of the fortress!

          It took me many months of searching to finally find a copy of the out-of-print  Jesus Scroll by Donovan Joyce, but I finally found one in West Miami, Fla. And copied it. But what finally convinced me that Jesus was really at Masada in 73 AD was taking my own Bible to Masada, and comparing what I read in Revelation chapters 15 and 16 with what I saw at Masada and my memories of the TV movie about Masada I had viewed previously.

       Turn with me first in your Bibles to Revelation chapter 15, which is needed to get the Dead Sea location and the Essene language clearly in mind before the action really begins in Revelation chapter 16.

         Rev. 15:1 “And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God.”.

      Rev. 15:2 “And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast … stand on the sea of glass.”

         I saw this “sea of glass” from the top of Masada, as anyone can see it with any imagination or flair for poetry.  The salt makes it look like “glass”.

        Rev. 15:2 “and them that had gotten the victory over the (Roman) beast, and over his image (the idolatrous ensigns the Romans always carried into battle), and over his MARK, (the tattoos on the foreheads or hands of the soldiers), and over the NUMBER of his name (“X” for the 10th Roman legion)---- (these, the victorious Zealots --”stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God (ready to die by suicide!

    In the Jewish war of 70-73 AD, the Romans had already destroyed Jerusalem, and the temple, and now they were trying to kill the last surviving resistance……at Masada!

    The sense of Revelation 15:2 and according to the “Jesus Scroll”, Jesus himself, is that the Zealots, will defeat the Romans!

     In the real story, that revealed by history and archaeology, but NOT by Revelation 15 and 16, is that they DID THIS, not by killing all the Romans, but  by dying themselves!

      Those aquainted with the Masada story have seen a picture of the remains of one of the larger Roman camps, as found by Yigael Yadin’s excavators on the flat plain near to the hill of Masada.  It must have been a rather impressive array of huts, tents, and other structures meant to support the thousands of Roman soldiers of the 10th legion.  That is what Josephus the historian describes them as doing in “Wars of the Jews”.   And that is what Yigael Yadin found to be what happened in his excavations in the 1960’s!

      In Revelation chapter 15, Jesus, the witness, is describing this heroic death in poetic language!

         Rev. 15:2 “them that had gotten the victory over the (Roman) beast, …stand on the SEA  OF  GLASS (their reflection in the Dead Sea far below),..”

      “having the harps of God.” (celebration, heaven, victory over life and over death…).

        The “orthodox” explanation --- Jesus, as “God”, sees everything, good or bad, that goes on in our world.  And, of course, like God, knows everything that will happen before it happens. So he inspired “John” to write this prophetic poetry.

        However, in the light of what Donovan Joyce saw and heard in Israel of the 1960’s, and what has been learned about Jesus since then, the following explanation is now possible, and indeed more likely than the orthodox view!

          My explanation of how Jesus went to Masada (and why). Jesus had foretold the destruction of both the temple and Jerusalem 40 years before it happened.  (See Matthew 24:1,2) Jesus was a Jew and an Essene.  Their suffering was his suffering.    Although a Pacifist, Jesus had Zealot friends.     Indeed, three of his original 12 disciples were zealots.

      In the Gospels and Acts, Jesus often “appeared” seemingly out of nowhere after his crucifixion and resurrection.   He appeared to Paul at Damascus, and Peter in Caesarea (supposedly in visions).  In reality these were not “visions” but real visits by a living Jesus.   There is no reason that he would not similarly want to be with the Masada martyrs in their final stand against Rome.

       In Yigael Yadin’s book about Masada there is pictured a fragment of scroll found by Yigael Yadin’s excavators at Masada.  Pictured as found.  And below opened and photographed.    Of some support to the Jesus Scroll story is that a cut portion of the Essene scroll “Songs of the Sabbath Sacrifice” was found   (Yadin, pgs. 172,173).  Also an intact clay jar was found similar to the one the smuggler had shown Donovan Joyce.

 

  Josephus’ Account 

      The Wars of the Jews Book 7 Chapter 8, (252) “When Bassus was dead in Judea, Flavius Silva succeeded him as procurator there; who, when he saw that all the rest of the country was subdued in this war, and that there was but one only stronghold that was still in rebellion, he got all his army together that lay in different places, and made an expedition against it.      This fortress was called MASADA. (253) It was one Eleazar, a potent man, and the commander of these Sicarii, that had seized upon it.”

         The Wars of the Jews Book 7 Chapter 8, (275) “For now it was that the Roman general came, and led his army against Eleazar and those Sicarii who held the fortress MASADA together with him; and for the whole country adjoining, he presently gained it, and put garrisons into the most proper places of it; (276) he also built a wall quite around the entire fortress, that none of the besieged might easily escape: he also set his men to guard the several parts of it: (277) he also pitched his camp in such an agreeable place as he had chosen for the siege…”

       Verse 5 “And after that I (Yeshua ben Ya’acob ben Gennesareth) looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony (the Holy Essenes, who practiced the strictest religious laws in Israel) in heaven  (at Qumran and Khirbet Mird) was opened: (opened here means empty, deserted!).”

        Verse 6 “And the seven angels (the Zealots and Sicarii) came out of the temple (left Qumran en masse) having the seven plagues, (ready to afflict the Romans with the WRATH OF GOD), clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles. (attired like Essene High Priests.)”

       The Wars of the Jews Book 7 Chapter 8, (277)  Flavius Silva, the Roman general “….pitched his camp in such an agreeable place as he had chosen for the siege, and at which place the rock belonging to the fortress did make the nearest approach to the neighboring mountain,….

       Yigael Yadin added (in the 1960’s (page 213) “This camp stands slightly to the north of and close to the assault ramp, and from this vantage point Silva could not only follow the course of battle with ease, but he could also, if he was so minded, speak directly with Eleazar”.

        Verse 7 “And one of the four beasts  (FATE or the Age of ARIES, God of War) gave unto the seven angels (the leaders of the Zealots and Sicarii)  seven golden vials full of the WRATH OF GOD, who liveth for ever and ever. (the One behind all events attributed to FATE!).

           Verse 8 “And the temple ( at Qumran and Khirbet Mird) was filled with smoke (because by now the Romans had set both places on fire)  from the Glory of God, and from his power; (again the God of FATE is behind all events, good or bad!)  and no man was able to enter into the temple, (demolished!), till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.” (in reality, for decades!)

        The Wars of the Jews Book 7 Chapter 8, (277)  The Roman camp pitched by Silva “….which yet was a place of difficulty for getting plenty of provisions; (278) for it was not only food that was to be brought from a great distance [to the army], and this with a great deal of pain to those Jews who were appointed for that purpose, but water was also to be brought to the camp, because the place afforded no fountain that was near it.  (279) When therefore Silva had ordered these affairs beforehand, he fell to besieging the place; which siege was likely to stand in need of a great deal of skill and pains…”

       Verse 1 “And I heard a great voice out of the temple (the voice of Yeshua ben Ya’acob ben Gennesareth, Essene Messiah) saying to the seven angels (the leaders of the Zealots and Sicarii), Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the WRATH OF GOD upon the earth. (the Roman soldiers).”

          Verse 2 “And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore (boils, blisters, and sunburn) upon the men who had the MARK of the (Roman) beast, and upon them which worshipped his IMAGE (the idolatrous banners of the Roman tenth legion.)”

       The Wars of the Jews Book 7 Chapter 8, (280)  At Masada “There was a rock not small in circumference, and very high.  It was encompassed with valleys of such vast depth downward that the eye could not reach their bottoms; they were abrupt, and such as no animal could walk upon, excepting at two places of the rock, where it subsides, in order to afford a passage for ascent, though not without  difficulty.  (281) Now, of the ways that lead to it, one is from the lake Asphaltus, towards the sunrising, and another on the west, where the ascent is easier…”

     (282)    At Masada “..the one of these ways is called the Serpent , as resembling that animal –“

       Verse 3 “And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.”  I have shown before that all this occurred at the Dead Sea, in which everything died, even people, if they stayed in this water for longer than a few minutes at a time.

          Verse 4 “And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.”

       (The Zealots had poisoned the desert wells and springs with  dead animals [blood]).  This was shown in the Masada TV Miniseries.

      Verse 5 “And I  (Yeshua) heard the angel of the waters (the Zealot who contaminated the wells) say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shall be, because thou hast judged thus.” Verse 6 “For they (the Romans) have shed the blood of saints and prophets (most of the people in Jerusalem), and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.”

        Verse 8 “And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire..”  Verse 9 “And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which had power over these plagues: and they (the Roman soldiers) repented not to give him (the God of the Jews) - glory.”

       Readers of Revelation have always assumed that all these things described are still in our Future! But now we know that the Essenes wrote these things (John of Patmos was an Essene) we can find out some of them just describe the Past! However, Essenes believed if you describe the Past, you also describe the Future!

     Masada is almost always extremely hot and dry! All day long, from sun up to sunset, the sun at Masada burns men “like fire”!      How the Jewish Zealots and Essenes brought this torture on the Romans was to entice them, lead them, to Masada.      The secondary meaning is that the Romans eventually burned through the last Zealot defenses “with fire”.

       Verse 10 “And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast ;  Rome and Italy);  and his  kingdom was full of darkness.”

      A famous Essene scroll is about the “War between the Sons of Light and the Sons of Darkness.”

      Verse 10b “And they  gnawed their tongues for pain, 11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.”

      Here editorial liberty allows the darkness to be blamed for parched tongues (thirst) and pain of hard labor in the hot desert.

The Sixth Plague

          Verse 12 “And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.” This is the first truly prophetic statement in this series!

         Verse 12 “... the great river Euphrates; …. the kings of the east…” stand for, and always have -- Babylon (Iraq), Medo-Persia (Iran), and nowadays, Islam! 

         Verse 13 “And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon (Islamic terrorists out of the Eastern countries, “Dragons of Babylon”) and out of the mouth of the beast (Christian terrorists out of Rome, etc.), and out of the mouth of the false prophet (Israeli terrorists, the other Monotheists).”

       Verse 14 “..to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.”

        The MONOTHEISTIC VIEW shared by all the terrorists, is that “God”, Yahweh, Jehovah, or Allah (all the same powerful, all-knowing Diety) wants this battle to happen, and has planned for it to occur!

       Verse 16 “And he (the three evil “gods” or “devils”) gathered them (the “Sons of Light” and Darkness) together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue ARMAGEDDON.” Here, after our brief excursion into the future in verses 12-14, we are back at MASADA, waiting for “the END.”

      The Wars of the Jews Book 7 Chapter 8, (305) “..there was a certain eminency of the rock, very broad and very prominent, but three hundred cubits beneath the highest part of Masada; it was called the White Promontory.  (306)  Accordingly he (Flavius Silva) got upon that part of the rock and ordered the army to bring earth: and when they fell to that work with alacrity, and abundance of them together, the bank was raised, and became solid for two hundred cubits in height. (307)  Yet was not this bank thought sufficiently high for the use of the engines that were to be set upon it; but still another elevated work of great stones compacted together was raised…”

        (308) “..the other machines that were now got ready were like those that had first devised by Vespasian, and afterward by Titus, for sieges. (309)  There was also a tower made of the height of sixty cubits, and all over plated with iron, out of which the Romans threw darts and stones from the engines, and soon made those that fought from the walls of the place to retire, and would not let them lift up their head above the works.  (310) At the same time Silva ordered that great battering ram which he had made, to be brought thither;…”

      The Wars of the Jews Book 7 Chapter 8, (310)  (The battering) “..to be set against the wall, and to make frequent batteries against it, which with some difficulty broke down a part of the wall, and quite overthrew it. (311) However, the Sicarii made haste, and presently built another wall within that, which should not be liable to the same misfortune from the machines with the other: it was made soft and yielding, and so was capable of avoiding the terrible blows that affected the other  It was framed after the following manner:- (312) They had laid together great beams of wood lengthwise, one close to the end of another…, and earth was put into the space…”

        Verse 17 “And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air, and there came a great voice (the voice of Yeshua ben Ya’acob ben Gennesareth) out of the temple (Herod’s Mini-temple at Masada) of heaven (Qumran now destroyed), from  the throne (of Yeshua ben Ya’acob ben Gennesareth), saying,

         Verse 18 “And there were voices,(shouts back and forth between the attackers and the attacked) and thunders (the thundering of the battering ram against the wall) and lightnings (as the Romans fired fire arrows and torches at the inner wall the Zealots had built);…”

        Verse 18b “And there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.”  The “earthquake” was the earthquake of the fall to the earth of the remains of the charred and burnt beams – allowing the Romans  to rush in with swords drawn to slaughter every man, woman, and child they found alive.  

       But during the night the Zealots and Essenes, under Eleazar and Jesus, had drawn lots and quietly committed mass suicide, those with the lots killing the others and themselves, as painlessly and quickly as possible.   The method: a surgical incision to the neck, cutting the jugular vein.   The victims (or “victors”, depending on your viewpoint), bled to death in the arms of their spouses and loved ones.

         The Zealots and other Essenes on top of the Masada fortress had the advantage of holding the “high ground”.  Also they had missiles and catapults left there by Herod and by Roman garrisons.  But they kept this arsenal secret from their attackers. 

         When they first built their camp by Masada, the Romans put their tents too close.

        At least in the TV mini-series and movie, the Zealots taunted the Romans below by flushing their laundry water and bathwater over the side of the precipice.   To show them how much water they had.  Also they flung dung from the latrines at the Romans..

       The Romans noted where the dung fell, and thought they were out of range of the catapults.   

     Waiting until the complete Roman camp was set up, some of it within range, and the soldiers were not paying attention , the Zealots struck!

 

        With all their catapults flinging 100 pound round rocks at once, an “earthquake” was caused in the Roman camp (by missiles)! The Masada film showed tents are being knocked down, and injured people being carried off.  This blitz only lasted minutes.

          However, the biggest “Earthquake” in its importance is the “Earthquake” that occurred when the Romans finally knocked down the Zealot wall with their battering ram.  This “Earthquake” ended the Jewish “revolt” and the “Essene World” in the Wilderness.

         Verse 19 “And the great city (Pagan Rome, then Christian Rome) was divided into three parts , (Christianity, Islam, and a resurrected Judaism), and the cities of the nations fell…. ( WWI and WWII): and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of HIS WRATH.” (our present confrontation)

       Verse 20 “And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.” Death of Essenism!  

        Dr. Barbara Thiering PhD discovered that the Essenes assigned the Mediterranean Islands to Essene overseers. And certain Mountains were also “holy” to Essenes.

    Verse 21 “And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceedingly great.”

  ADDENDUM: Yigael Yadin: 

“The Essenes Were at Masada!”

         Since I myself am not a famous person, and Dr. Barbara Thiering has her detractors, and Donovan Joyce, author of the 1973 book The Jesus Scroll has no scroll to show us, it’s important to quote an “authority”.  A person whose authority  few people will doubt.    The subject: Were there Essenes at Masada?

         Once Yigael Yadin has told us it is his opinion that There were, indeed, Essenes at Masada, and his reasons for saying that, then, of course, Donovan Joyce’s story and mine here given, become more likely!

         P age  172 - 174 of Yadin’s book MASADA: “…the scroll which gave us the greatest surprise was discovered in the south-eastern corner of the room.…The torn scroll fragment, when photographed, was found to contain Hebrew writing.  When I began reading it, I came across a line which read, ‘The song of the sixth Sabbath sacrifice on the ninth of the second month’.  Seeing this and a few other lines, I was suddenly struck by the amazing fact that this text was exactly the same as the text of one of the scrolls discovered at Qumran, in cave four.  That scroll was a very definite sectarian scroll which details ‘songs of the Sabbath sacrifices’ dealing with each Sabbath and its date. ….The sixth Sabbath could have fallen on the ninth of the second month only on the basis of the special calendar used by the Qumran sect.    A minority of scholars have long suggested that the Qumran sect should be identified with the Sicarii Zealots, the very Zealots who occupied Masada…It seems to me that the discovery of this scroll serves as proof indeed that the Essenes also participated in the great revolt against the Romans.”

        You’re Right, Prof. Yadin, and we have two, not just one, eyewitness reports to prove it.   One preserved for us by the Australian reporter and author Donovan Joyce.   And the other where it can not easily be destroyed.   In the Bible!
